In present day London, vampires live side-by-side with mortals living under two sets of laws. The Romanorum make the vampire rules, helping the Princes who rule the cities. Not all vampires are thrilled with the system. A rash of rogue vampires--vampires who have killed mortals--has descended upon London, and it is up to London's vampire prince, Mael Black, to bring them under control. When he learns who is truly behind the rogues, however, Mael's task becomes more complicated than he would like. His only choice is to turn to a sorcerer of questionable reputation--Cian Carmichael. But Cian is more than he seems to be, and despite the dangers inherent in becoming involved with him, Mael finds he is unable to resist. Cian is an angel, sent to bring the rogue vampires under control. Acquiring a reputation as a vampire hunter, Cian becomes notorious in the city Mael rules. The last thing he expects is to fall in love with the prince of the London vampires himself. Can these two deal with their growing attachment, and save London from the threat it faces?

Review
Kiernan Kelly, author of Riding Heartbreak Road, writes: From the first page of this thrilling novel we are swept into a world frighteningly similar to our own, with one exception: the creatures of the night have "come out," living openly among us. For the most part, humans and vampires live in peace, each governed by both human law and a strict code of conduct presided over by vampire royals. In London, Prince Mael Black governs the body of vampires that make their home there, keeping order and administering justice as needed. Threatening Black's authority, and humankind's safety, is a group of rogue vampires who seek to destroy him. Human-killers, they flaunt the laws established to keep peace between the two species. Enter Cian Carmichael. As golden as the sun, the polar opposite of Mael Black's dark beauty, Cian is an angelic vampire killer whose heavenly mission is to seek out and destroy rogue vampires. The need to keep his nature secret becomes a problem when Cian, through a series of unusual circumstances, finds himself with the need to seek out Mael Black's aid. Chemistry sizzles between the two from the first moment they meet. Unlikely bedfellows, unlikelier comrades-in-arms, each tries as hard as he can, but neither can withstand the fierce passions that threaten to consume them. When they finally come together, the pages smoke with the heat of their encounters. The cast of richly developed, intensely interesting characters in A PRINCE'S ANGEL makes this tale leap from the pages and capture the reader's imagination in a tight fist that doesn't loosen until the very last page. Thrills, chills, and electrifying sex enrich a plot that will have you itching to turn the page, desperate to see it through to its conclusion.
Customer Reviews
Disappointing
While the authors of this book have created an intriguing world and promising storyline the final product doesn't live up to its potential. The writing is unpolished and rife with grammatical errors and the characterization is somewhat cliched and one dimensional. However, in this regard, the writing is no worse than that of many beginning authors. I bought this book with some reservations based on the high reviews and the hope that its intriguing plotline would carry the rough workmanship through to the end.
Unfortunately, it quickly became clear that the book's true--and ultimately unforgivable--weakness lay with it's awkward dialogue and jumbled plotting. Character dialogue reads as if written by two people via email, with one character giving a lengthy monologue and a second character replying to each point in order and completely ouside the context of the conversation. (e.g. Character A tells a joke, asks a question, and says something insulting. Character B then laughs, answers the question, and becomes offended.)
The plotting of the book becomes still more frustrating and disjointed as characters discuss events they should have no current knowledge of and then promptly forget said conversations (for example, please note Mael and Cian's conversation about Ashton's killing, followed by Mael's surprise at being informed of said killing by Sav). The narrative lurches in a painfully jarring manner as plot and character inconsistencies stack up. One begins to suspect the authors each wrote bits of the story in secret, without bothering to inform their coauthor.
Sadly disappointing, as I really wanted to enjoy this book, and would love to see a version cleaned up by a decent editor. I couldn't finish it myself and can't recommend it.
Angels and Vampires Together
This book held me in its grip from the first page with its brooding, dark, gothic mood which ratcheted up the suspense that never let go until the very end. What can I say that will do it justice and give the readers a sense of what awaits? I'll start where else, at the beginning.
A bit of background is important to set the scene. In 1962 the world became aware of the existence of vampires and this precipitated a war involving several countries and a faction of vampires that broke away from the Romanorum, the governing body of the Diocourides Society which rules vampires. The Diocourides reached agreement with the United States in 1970 which officially recognized vampires as US citizens and since then humans and vampires have lived together in peace. The year is now 2005 and in the City of London Prince Mael Black governs the vampires who live there. However, the faction of vampires that attempted several years ago to take over several international cities now wants to destroy the peace in London by creating rogue vampires and their main target is Mael.
Cian Carmichael, an angel, a sorcerer and executioner of rogue vampires first meets the Prince at a mutual `kill' and the sexual undercurrents between them are apparent immediately although they both try to ignore them because they don't believe that angels and vampires can be lovers. But with menace coming from every direction, the looming danger conspires to bring them together as they form an uneasy alliance to counter the threat. In the midst of everything going on in Mael's world he is given a most difficult, almost impossible task to accomplish and he has to determine whether Cian is what he appears to be on the surface and if he can be trusted, because Cian is the only one who can help him.
During the conflict and almost open warfare happening around them, Mael's and Cian's love story evolves and plays out and there is so much emotion between these two characters it bleeds off the pages. With creatures on all sides, even those in the highest offices seizing every opportunity to harm Mael, our two heroes have a lot to contend with at the same time as they explore and try to resist their volatile attraction to each other. Despite their best intentions they give in to the inevitable and it is a conflagration that neither can extinguish.
Mael and Cian are polar opposites in looks as well as temperament but the differences are not quite what they appear. Mael is beautiful but dark as would be expected of a creature of the night; however he has other characteristics that endear him to the reader. Cian, whose golden aura seems to glow, also has a dark side as he lives in the shadows to fulfill his very dangerous mission of hunting down and killing rogue vampires.
In The Prince's Angel Mychael Black and Shayne Carmichael have created a world where belief is suspended in a story that is original, fast paced and as complex as the two flawed protagonists. The authors take the time to introduce these three dimensional characters and a wonderful supporting cast to the reader and build the story and the anticipation level before Mael and Cian become lovers. When they do, the sex is as delightful, delicious and exhilarating as readers have come to expect from this duo that have made writing about sex an art form in itself. The plot is rich in complexity, ingenious, clever, and intense; the story is also horrifying and bloody at the same time but it is so riveting and engrossing it left me breathless and wishing for more of the same. The story oozes with emotion and tension which weaves its way between Mael and Cian. Books from these two writers' imagination are an auto-buy for me because I have never been disappointed by them.
The sequel to The Prince's Angel, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE is scheduled for release at the end of July, 2008
The Prince's Angel by Mychael Black & Shayne Carmichael
Mael Black is the prince of London's vampire. He is dark and dangerous, but he is like a pater familiae for his vampires: he takes care of them and like an old warlord he holds court to listen to their problem. He is not a lonely warrior.
Cian Carmichael instead is a lonely warrior, an angel who has lived too many years among the madness of the human world and now his behaviour is more similar to human people than angels. He is a hunter of rogue vampires but he fights alone, in the shadows of the city.
Cian is irremediably drawn to Maen, but a vampire and an angel is an impossible couple. But love maybe can create a place among two different existence to allow to two lover to share their bodies and at the end also their hearts.
The very originality of this novel is that the darker character is Cian, the angel, he walks alone in the shadows, instead Mael, the vampire, has duties that oblige him to deal with an entire court of people.
A very romantic gothic novel setting in a modern London but with the atmosphere of endless time. This is not the tale of a fallen angel, but his quest for the true love.
