About the Author
St Paul, Minnesota resident Gwenyth Swain is the author of several works of fiction and nonfiction for children, including the award-winning Bookworks: Making Books by Hand (Carolrhoda 1995). She has a masters degree in book arts and has received research and writing grants from the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators and the Minnesota Historical Society.

Smiling (English-Arabic) (Small World series)
The Small World series bilingual books are an excellent choice for today's child growing up in a multicultural world. The format shows a series of children, from different ethnic backgrounds, all involved in a single shared activity--in this case, smiling. It is the perfect "jumping off point" for discussions with youngsters about how all people share basic needs, wants, feelings, etc., regardless of how different they seem.

The bonus is the bilingual text. It is obviously a good text for those learning the second language. However, it is also a good way to introduce children to the concept of diffent languages, different alphabets and different ways of communicating.

The photography is attractive, appropriate and supports the concepts conveyed in the text.
