Editorial Reviews
Review
Without doubt, Pele is the finest footballer this planet has ever seen. From his World Cup debut in 1958 through to the famous 1970 Brazil team the finest international side ever assembled, his was a charmed career. There is no false modesty - he knows his place at the top of the pile - and his political and ambassadorial works since he stopped playing have had an air of both naivety and opportunism as he exploits his name shamlessly in the pursuit of various causes, often usefully, occasionally less so. To do justice to his talents and to his extraordinary life would test the writing skills of Hemingway, never mind Harris, a tabloid journalist. But he tells the story simply, although with a willingness to and each chapter dramatically and with a strangely infectious sense of awe. A workmanlike of a man who is anything but. (Kirkus UK)
