Product Description

Jacopo Tintoretto was recognized in his own lifetime as an extraordinarily prolific and bold painter, and his status as one of the great Renaissance painters is unchallenged. With Titian and Veronese, Tintoretto shared a new pictorial language characterized by bravura brushwork, but he went further by creating a style that synthesized Tuscan and Venetian techniques, combining Titian's very loose brushwork and Michelangelo's draftsmanship. Tintoretto perfected an extraordinarily efficient production system that enabled him to generate an impressive volume of paintings. The present book is based on a very thorough examination of fifty paintings and twenty drawings that enable readers to appreciate the originality and true artistic personality of one of the most outstanding painters in the history of art. Beautifully produced, it is a landmark publiciaton on Tintoretto, attempting to explain how and why he painted in the way he did—both unsettling and fascinating his contemporaries. It investigates particularly his "model theatres."

magnificent Tintoretto catalogue5
Tintoretto in Madrid? This exhibition, held recently at the Prado Museum, created quite a stir in the art world. It was the first major monographic showing of this artist's work since 1937. Of course most of the very large (and untransportable) Tintoretto paintings are to be seen in venues dotted around Venice. A significant proportion of the 49 paintings featured in this exhibition were sourced from Madrid. Others come from various other international sources and only a relatively few originate from Venice.

This catalogue gives a good impression of what art lovers were effusing about. Although Tintoretto was not entirely consistent in the quality of his enormous output, the paintings in the catalogue are generally of a superior quality. They are simply ravishing in their beauty.

Apart from interesting introductory essays concerning the artist, there are many color reproductions of his major works not presented in the exhibition. Additionally there are presentations of a small number of Tintoretto's drawings.

Do not be negatively swayed by the cost of this soft cover book. Given the excellence of the reproductions (some of the finest that I have encountered) and the luxurious quality of the paper and printing, it is well worth the asking price.
