When Bast picks up Trick, a street hustler with few prospects, Trick is prepared to play along, to have some fun. He figures he's got a good thing going with free room and board, so why rock the boat? What he's not prepared for is falling in love. Good thing for him the obsession is shared on both sides, Bast falling for him just as quickly, needing him just as much as Trick needs Bast. Trouble waits just around the corner for them, though. Bast is far older than Trick can even imagine, and he has another lust that's just as pressing as his love for Trick. Trick thinks it's all fun and games for a while, but he learns soon enough that certain things about Bast's life are deadly serious. And deadly. Will Bast's vampire nature drive he and Trick apart? Or can Trick accept that need takes all forms, and give himself to Bast completely?

Passion & Emotion
Trick is a prostitute. He is out one night looking for his next john when he sees an intriguing man in line at a club. The two men acknowledge each other with steamy looks and unspoken desire. Trick continues on and the young man, Bast, comes after him suggesting games and sex for the night. They spend the night together, but Trick leaves soon after. Bast lets him go, but not before he has had a taste of Trick.
Bast is a vampire, and one taste of Trick is not nearly enough for him. After a few days, they meet up again and this time their night of passion is filled with affection as well. Trick really likes Bast and that scares him. Bast feels the same and he is terrified of what will happen when he tells Trick what he is. When the time comes, Trick reacts badly to the news. Now Bast has to find a way to live without the man he cares so much for. Or does he? Trick is miserable too. These two lost souls need to find a way to make a life together.
I was mesmerized by Trick and Bast in Need. Bast's age and life story are fascinating. The hard, lonely life that Trick leads is sad. Finding each other was a blessing for both of them. Need is full of emotion and sensuality. It's erotic and loving. The acceptance and love Trick and Bast finally find in each other's arms is beautiful. Had there not been group and menage sex play involved, Need would have been perfect because I felt Trick's longing for their relationship to be one-on-one. With Need you get all the riveting passion and emotion found in a Sean Michael book, combined with an intriguing vampire story. I really enjoyed it!

Good but could have been a lot better.
"Need" needs plot development. There are good episodes, many very touching, but without a well-constructed plot the book goes nowhere. The two principal characters are fascinating, especially the vampire. It is hard not to care for them, but the story peters out.
Writing courses have too often done their students a great disservice. Good writing is not about self-expression; it's about communication. Good writing needs structure. There is some good stuff here, but the book needs more. Merely writing good episodes does not produce an excellent novel. This could have been a great book. I wish it had.
Need Each Other
Trick was looking for just that, a trick, when he runs into Bast. Trick is a street hustler with very few options or prospects and he hits pay dirt when he meets Bast who could not be more different if he tried. Trick lives with other squatters and has to sell his body to eat while Bast has money to burn.
Bast is a centuries old vampire who is hoping for a good time when he hooks up with Trick. He just wants to play and, after some very hot sex at a club, invites Trick home with him for one night of fun which turns out to be memorable. They meet again shortly after and can't keep their hands off each other so Bast invites Trick home again, but this time he stays.
Bast and Trick become more and more addicted to each other and they fall in love. Then Bast tells Trick what he is. He is devastated when Trick leaves, calling him a monster and vowing never to return. Bast is heartbroken and moves away for his own safety as well as to forget about Trick, but nothing works. Several weeks later Trick finds him and is horrified at his frail and weak condition and promises never to leave again. Can Trick accept what Bast is and love him regardless?
Trick and Bast are two halves of one whole; they are obsessed with each other and can't bear to be apart. They are so open about their feelings that reading the book, I felt like a voyeur at times. It's hard not to become captivated by this couple. Bast is gentle, needy and playful and Trick has to learn to trust again, in spite of the tough life he has led. The emotion and sensuality between the two main characters, the palpable need that is ever present, and the passion and eroticism in the tale are addictive. In Need, Sean Michael could not have come up with two main characters whose lives and personalities are more different but the concept works because he wields such a masterful, yet sensitive touch in a different kind of vampire love story.
