A Refreshing Read
Under most circumstances, I would much rather be sipping on a cold beer than reading about it. But in this case, the read is every bit as refreshig as the subject matter. The story presented here is less about the process of beer-making and more about a group of hard-working people, working in and exporting a piece of their community bottle by bottle, unwilling to compromise even when the money wagon backs up to the loading dock. The writing is colorful and full of rich detail about the history of Shiner, the brewery, as well as the town in Texas that bears the same name. The design is fresh and has the feel of a hand-designed, wood and lead letter-pressed folio, full of old photographs and ephemera probably dug out old file cabinets. You can almost smell the dust and barley when you page through it. This book is definitley worth digesting if you are into Texas history, the craft of beer-making, branding and maintaining a small business, or all of the above.
