If Sandra Brown married Sara Paretsky
This book is a unique blend of romance and mystery with a lesbian twist. Amy Dalton lives in Chicago and builds Internet websites for a living. Dusty Hardin, an ex-paramedic living in Sedona, Arizona, owns and operates a jeep rental agency catering to the tourist trade. They meet when Amy goes to Arizona as a result of a suspicious auto accident that has left her brother in critical condition.
Romance is cool. I like hot lesbian romance. But what I really love is a good mystery, and this one qualifies for sure. All the elements are here --- intricate clues, red herrings, suspense, danger, and even a fair dollop of violence (this isn't strictly a cozy).
I'm a fan of romantic suspense, and I read quite a few mainstream novels just because I like the genre so much. This book rivals those of the top mainstream writers, and the fact that the author is "one of us" more than doubles the pleasure as far as I'm concerned, especially when it comes to the sex scenes. I found the story uplifting because of its inspiring vision of LGBT life. I felt good when I finished it.
Keeps Getting Better
I bought this book because I enjoyed the author's preceding trilogy, the "Family of Choice" series. This one is better. There is a whole new cast of characters (although we do get a brief update on a few of the people from the previous stories, much to my delight).
There are several simultaneous plot threads which come together at the end. The main one deals with Amy Dalton's investigation of the suspicious circumstances surrounding her brother's death. When Amy uncovers links to an old and controversial murder case involving a lesbian mother, the details of an elaborate web of deceit begin to emerge.
Members of the local LGBT community, including Dusty Hardin, owner of a jeep rental agency, come together to give Amy support. Along the way, Dusty and Amy become immersed in an intense romance. As the details of Dusty's background emerge, the reader begins to understand and appreciate the dynamics of their relationship.
The author never dawdles. There is a huge amount of plot and substance packed into this book. In the end the culprit is exposed, and I have to admit I was surprised, even though the clues were right in front of me. I do think this is an exceptional LGBT mystery that will endure for years to come.
