Painful reality
A blatantly honest depiction of the violent oppression that the indigenous Africans were exposed to in the former French colonies. Although disturbing and painful (depending on your life experience), this novel is a defenite must-read for those wishing to understand the coloniser, the colonized and colonialism. This novel gives a voice to a boy subjected to European brutality, and we are able to see his once-silenced perspective.
Lovely and accurate story
This story of a boy-servant in Cameroon is fitting example of the cultural contrast between the colonizing French and the indigenous people of Western Africa. This story reminds us that truth and civilization are merely matters of perception. Anyone studying francophone literature should stop to read this short piece.
