Product Description

Since the late sixties, American artist James Turrell (born 1943 in Los Angeles) has devoted much of his work to the depiction and study of light, natural and artificial, and space. Influenced by his early studies in psychology, Turrell explores the effect light and space have on perception and spatial understanding. Through meticulously designed ethereal installations, Turrell manipulates the viewer’s senses and creates shapes that seem to have mass and weight, though they are solely made of light.

Not much Turrell here...3
I am a huge fan of James Turrell's work and was disappointed when this arrived in the mail and I realized that fully half of its size is given over to a double-page-binding technique that adds no text or imagery, but simply plain orange pages, to no clear effect. For every page of text or illustration there is a "blank" orange page attached to it. Not only does this seem a bit wasteful, it makes the book unwieldy to thumb through. Also, the admittedly beautiful die-cut cover will tear almost immediately. At least mine did--as soon as I put it on the shelf with other books. And I say this as someone who has hitchhiked across several states to see exhibitions of JT's work. I haven't yet found the perfect book on Turrell, but there must be a better one out there than this.
