Books to Grow Up With
One feature which this reviewer finds appealing in a children's book is its potential to grow with the child. At the beginning, parents read the book to the toddler. Then, the child "reads" the pictures or illustrations to himself, understanding it partly based on what he sees and what remembers his parents reading to him. Eventually, he is able to read the words aloud, makes sense of the texts on the pages and begins to really understand what the story is all about. To complete the experience, the child may then read the story to a younger child, probably embellishing it a bit, based on the young reader's own circumstances.
With //Caillou//, this experience can actually happen. Each of the five stories (sleeping over at a friend's house, making a snowman, putting toys away, messing up a younger sister's doll, and creating a breakfast surprise for mom and dad) are relatable with children three years and older. The illustrations, drawn with simple lines, vivid primary colors, and universal facial expressions, are effective in telling the story by themselves so that the child can understand what's happening on each page based on the illustrations alone. These books sized to fit into a child's backpack are sure to become comfortable companions during a child's growing years.

Great books!!
My granddaughter is 2-1/2 and we sit and read the Caillou books at least once a day....all five, one after the other. The things that Caillou does, and experiences, are perfect lessons for her and we talk about the book and then go read the next one. Very nice series.
Okay Books
My son loves Caillou the cartoon but these books are not that fun. The pictures are too simple. He didn't enjoy it much.
