Christmas specials with John Denver have been a favorite holiday tradition with families for years. This 47-minute, 1991 CBS television special finds John Denver joined by friends Clint Black, Katy Mattea, and Patty Loveless on Montana's Fort Belknap Indian Reservation. Images of Denver on horseback, traversing the wide open plains and herding and roping cattle are interspersed with more intimate looks at Denver, Mattea, Black, Loveless, and other friends gathered for an old-fashioned sing-along in a rustic barn. The interaction between singers is warm and personal and lends a feeling of holiday warmth to powerful songs like "Christmas for Cowboys," "Christ Child's Lullaby," and "Someday Soon." The second half of the special offers a glimpse of Native American traditions, especially focusing on the children of the Fort Belknap Reservation, along with a live concert performance and additional performances in the barn. A children's choir joins Denver in concert versions of fun Christmas songs like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells." Especially moving is Denver's delivery of the ballad "I Want to Live." Denver's ruminations about the changing demographics of the American family and his insights into friendships new and old, the beautiful plains of Montana, and his plea to reach out to others strike a sentimental chord and provide a Christmas message worth pondering through the years. --Tami Horiuchi

JOHN DENVER CHRISTMAS5
BEING THE LAST CHRISTMAS SPECIAL JOHN DENVER MADE, I THANK GOD THIS HAS BEEN RAISED FROM THE ARCHIVES AND IS AVAILABLE TO THE CONSUMER. CLINT BLACK, KATHY MATTEA, AND PATTY LOVELESS MAKE GUEST APPEARANCES, AND MY CHILDREN LOVE IT. WITH JINGLE BELLS ON A SLEIGH RIDE AND INDIANS DANCING TO A POTTERS WHEEL. FOR THE FAN, YOUNG AT HEART AND THOSE WHO WANT A GREAT CHRISTMAS VIDEO FOR THEIR COLLECTION. THIS IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST. MAY GOD BLESS YOU JOHN.

A Christmas Legacy5
I am thankful that John Denver was a contemporary of mine. He has inspired and motivated me during most of my adult life. Only John Denver could have given us Montana Christmas Skies. I cherish its beauty, its warmth, and its message. John Denver's music is a Christmas staple at our house, and this DVD, along with John Denver's legacy, will continue to touch my heart and spirit in the years to come. I recommend John Denver's music in general, and Montana Christmas Skies in particular, as nourishment for the soul.

A Wonderful Christmas Tradition5
I found this DVD in the bargain bin at Wal-Mart. Not being a particular John Denver fan (I like some of his stuff, but for the most part I can take it or leave it) I decided to take a chance.

I was very pleasantly surprised. JD, Clint Black, Kathy Mattea, and Patty Loveless jammin' in the barn is the best! Personal highlights for me are Clint Black's "Till Santa's Gone", Kathy Mattea's "Christ Child Lullaby", and Patty Loveless & Kathy Mattea do a great duet of "Someday Soon".

There are other highlights too like the JD classic "Grandma's Feather Bed", John singing "Rudolph" and "Away In A Manger" with a group of kids, and the bittersweet emotions evoked by John singing "I want to Live". Although I'm not a number one fan, the world is a much sadder place without him.

If you're thinking twice about purchasing this video, think no more. It's a wise purchase that you'll enjoy for years to come. I know I have.
