Editorial Reviews
From the Director
Gerard Oury (1919-) went to the Paris Conservatory of Dramatic Art and acted in numerous Swiss films. Yet apart from a handful of appearances - among them in Jacques Becker's "Antoine et Antoinette" (1947) and in "Le Dos au Mur" (aka Back to the Wall, 1958) - Oury made his mark in French cinema as a director. Some of his most well-known films include: "La Grande Vadrouille" (aka Don't Look Now... We've Been Shot At, 1966), "Le Cerveau" (aka The Brain, 1969), and "The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob" (1973).
About the Actor
Louis De Funes (1914-1983) is hailed around the world as the European king of comedy. He began in the 'music-halls' and cabarets of Paris and then graduated to supporting roles in films, becoming a well-known character actor in the 1940s and 1950s. Finally in 1963 he had a hit film of his very own with "Pouic-Pouic", and from there he became the top French comic of the decade. Some of his best known films: the 'Gendarme' series (1964-1982), "La Grande Vadrouille" (aka Don't Look Now... We've Been Shot At, 1966) and "The Mad Adventures of Rabbi Jacob" (1973).
Bourvil (1917-1970) began his career as a singer, working in radio and in Paris cabarets. Eventually he graduated to operettas and dramatic stage roles. He had small roles in movies for many years until his performance in "La Traversee de Paris" (aka Four Bags Full, 1956) won him the best actor award at the Venice Film Festival. Bourvil's trademark character was the simple, country-bred man who was not as naive as he seemed. Some of his best-known films: "Le Miroir a Deux Faces" (aka The Mirror Has Two Faces, 1958), "La Grande Vadrouille" (aka Don't Look Now... We've Been Shot At, 1966) and "Le Cerveau" (aka The Brain, 1969). "Le Corniaud" was the first film to pair the two top comics of the era - Louis de Funes and Bourvil - in leading roles. The public response was so overwhelming that producers scrambled for another vehicle to reunite the duo. The result was the following year's box office smash "La Grande Vadrouille".
