The Gold Standard
Frank with Ethel Merman is entertaining but the Frank and Dean video would be a bargain at ten times the price. It's really Frank and Dean and Bing Crosby and a now forgotten (but once rightly famous) Mitzi Gaynor. Put simply, in my view this is the gold standard of entertainment. Frank was on top form (obviously he had a new girlfriend) and the easy charm of all four performers simply carries you away. The songs are great: Day in, Day out, High Hopes plus two medleys from Frank, Dean and Bing and a light-hearted Cheek to Cheek with Dean, Bing and Mitzi (who holds her own perfectly with the others). The show is full of great touches and ad libs. There is no one around today who could come close to the quality of these performers. Listen to Frank's velvet voice in Talk to Me or Dean's literally supine performance of Wrap Your Troubles In Dreams or Bing in anything or Mitzi's dancing. These were the great entertainers and it's no exaggeration to say that as a piece of entertainment this video cannot be bettered. Plus Nelson Riddle arranged the music and (I almost forgot) there's an excellent section where Frank re-creates a nightclub atmosphere and sings The Lady is a Tramp, Just One of Those Things and others with a five piece band. I can honestly say that I have seen nothing better than this in any medium.
