Editorial Reviews

A cappella harmonies defined by the African-American church, doo wop, and R&B permeate The Persuasions' holiday disc. As singing groups go, these vocal veterans were making memorable music when N Sync and the Backstreet Boys were a twinkle in their parents' eyes. Although one could quibble with the bottom-heavy mix of the sound, You're All I Want for Christmas is a likeable set of tunes that have an audio verité quality; you feel like you could be standing around the fireplace singing the lively "Hey Santa Claus" as well as classics like "White Christmas," sung here by Mr. Bassman Profondo Jimmy Hayes, who applies the absolutely deepest pipes ever to this roasted chestnut. --Martin Keller

Customer Reviews

A nicer Christmas album is hard to find.5
A delight, start-to-finish. Here's what the L.A. Times' Randy Lewis wrote about this album: "The veteran group's a cappella treatments bring a visceral richness to these 14 tunes. They're all fun, but the best are those that tap the group's gospel roots and its street-corner foundation, which comes roaring through on a scorching version of 'Hey, Santa Claus.'" Listen to how they put a little soul into "Joy to the World," and marvel at the phrasing of Jerry Lawson, perhaps the most under-recognized lead singer of the last fifty years. A nicer Christmas album is hard to find.

Singing and Making Merry-The Persuasions4
The Persusaions have been the best Christmas present for the last 30++ years. A thoroughly enjoyable album and their first Christmas album. This is sure to become a periennal favorite of so many.Kudos to the obvious Jerry and bassman Jimmy, but they could not soar without the consistency of backups-Sweet Joe and Jayotis and new member on this album BJ et al. Joe has been there always in the background but providing the harmonies to keep the sound alive. A welcome addition to any collector's Christmas treasures.

This should become a holiday perennial.5
I'm not a critic, but I must say this is one lovely album of Christmas songs. The Persuasions are such expressive singers. Highlights: the rousing R&B of the goofy "Hey Santa Claus," a mellower-than-mellow "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," and a swinging "Joy to the World." It's the kind of album that you play once, and can't get out of your head---in a good sense. And it was recommended by the New York Times and L.A. Times, too!
