Editorial Reviews

The editors at the Madacy label did a nice job with this collection in choosing stirring, beautiful traditional music from various Native American cultures. Liner notes would have helped explain the significance and context of the different songs, but even without them the performances are highly enjoyable. Included are chants and dances from the Cherokee, Navaho, Sioux, and Comanche nations as well as a "Rain Chant," "Burial Chant," "Hunter's Chant," and other songs whose origins are not identified. Most of the songs present strong unison male voices backed by a large ceremonial drum. However, the whistles far in the background of "Dance of the Sun God" and "Chieftain Dance" add a delicate counterpoint, effectively evoking the mysteries of the natural world, the next world, and the meeting of the two. --Bob Tarte
Customer Reviews
authentic music
I ordered this for a class of young students. I needed an authentic example of native american music and found it in this cd. The best aspect of the cd were the various selections from many different tribes. The kids enjoyed it, and I was pleased to find that it was not a bastardization of native american music as so many others have been in the past.
Why didn't this hit the top forty?
Wow, what a compilation of Native American tunes. Being a fan of George Catlin's artwork, I took great pleasure in hearing what may have been the same chants and music that great artist was once privy to. Keep those hits coming. This, by the way, makes a truly great potlatch gift
Tribal Songs ... beautifully done
I use this with my 1st grade clas project on Native Americans. The kids love it and ask to listen to it long after our studies. What talent!
