Although it received no awards, Jerry Goldsmith's music for this endearing football drama is his most-heard work after Patton. Goldsmith reteamed with the filmmakers of Hoosiers for this similar true-life account of a sports underdog, in this case pint-size Rudy Ruettiger, who dreamed of playing for Notre Dame. Goldsmith is at his best finding the rhythmic Middle America, and the "Tryouts" track illustrates Goldsmith's playful variations of a common movie theme. The fully orchestrated, grandstanding finale is a stirring piece of music that inspires in its own right. These building themes--with a motif of Western movie flair--have made this soundtrack well known, but not connected with the film. Numerous studios have used the score for coming-attraction trailers (including the seemingly passive Good Will Hunting). The full soundtrack is well worth having versus just hearing the oft-used bits. --Doug Thomas

Jerry Goldsmith's best composition?5
Rudy. Written by Jerry Goldsmith in 1993, this score is probably one of his best scores yet. Using a mix of brass, piano, and percussion, this is a gorgeous soundtrack with a peaceful tune, yet very complex. Using the flute has the primary intrument, and the piano as the secondary intrument, this soundtrack is for all who enjoy peaceful, beautiful, and enlightening music. Although much of the music is slow and quiet, tracks such as "Take us out" are very inspirational, and yet again, not tense. Every single track on this CD is worth listening to, so do not hesitate to buy it! This soundtrack is often compared to Jerry Goldsmith's "Hoosiers", and is much the same style. If you have never heard this music before, then your best chance is at the beginning of an NFL football game. Since the movie Rudy is based on football, it has become popular with NFL advertising. This music has a much different style from "The Ghost in the Darkness", but then again, probably a better score. Even the movie itself is almost as good as the score!

"Rudy, Notre Dame an inspirational score...Jerry Goldsmith!"5
This is not just another sports story, human interest is the theme, and football is the game. Director David Anspaugh takes this to the highest plain...many people are involved in Rudy's life and he touches each one of them, just as he's about to do now...and Jerry Goldsmith's score (one of his best) puts you in that very sensitive and caring mood.

Goldsmith is a master of melody with shades of heartfelt feelings, not to mention he can swing the other way and give "dig your heels in" percussion, brass and power. From the opening track "MAIN TITLE", simply a sweet and beautiful theme, interwoven with musical underscoring in every cue. Many, not all scores can really get inside your head ~ "The Thorn Birds" (1983), by Henry Mancini comes to mind, he was one of the first composers to really give you melody within a score, complete and full, lots of heart and sincerity. Goldsmith proves without a doubt he's more than capable...just listen to "WAITING", slowly building with wind instruments, strings blending with tubular bells and brass answering the call..."TO NOTRE DAME", the irish will love this warm and tender almost sublime melody, the main theme once again faintly appears, you're drifting thoughts of the many students who previously occupied the halls of this great institution of education...Goldsmith's cue is arranged as a suite, combining all themes into one memorable experience.

Hats off to ~ Alexander Courage and Arthur Morton (orchestration), Robert Townson (executive album producer for Varese Sarabande), TriStar Pictures and our composer, conductor and producer...the legendary ~ JERRY GOLDSMITH!

Inspiring!5
Whenever you need a little pick-me-up or encouragement, just hit play on this CD! The musical arrangements are inspiring and uplifting on their own, but for anyone who has seen the movie, you cannot help but be reminded of the personal courage and determination of Rudy Ruttiger. A great musical score to a great movie, - you will not be disappointed with your purchase.

Be advised that the CD does not include the Notre Dame Fight Song that was featured in the ending credits of the movie.
