Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com essential recording
For 30 years, Los Van Van have been Cuba's finest dance band. Under the direction of bassist Juan Formell, the group created its own style called songo, which updated the traditional charanga blend of flute and violins with trombones, electronic keyboards, and three powerfully charismatic lead vocalists. This 1999 EMI Hemisphere collection features 12 definitive tracks taken from Van Van's releases on the Cuban Caribe label. "Ay, Mama, Recibeme" smoothly recalls the band's romantic sound of the '70s, while "Que Palo Es Ese!" is a hypnotically funky call to Central American nations to follow Cuba's revolutionary example in the '80s. Other tracks are of more recent vintage, including the majestic orisha chant "Soy Todo" and the rhythmically locomotive "El Tren Se Va." After three decades, Los Van Van have earned their place not only among the greatest Afro-Cuban and salsa bands, but among the world's best bands, period. --Rick Mitchell

Excellent sound. Van Van at their best!5
In a time of Cuban musician's invasion ... listening Van Van is a must! Dont't miss them.

THE BEST OF LOS VAN VAN- LOS VAN VAN4
Great compilation by BMG/MILAN of late 60's,70's & 80's recorded hits by "LOS VAN VAN". Top Van Van hits like "Hoy Se Cumplen Seis Semanas", "La Titimania", the funky "El Baile Del Buey Casao","Que Palo Es Ese", "Deja La Boberia", etc. make this CD probably the best compilation of Los Van Van released in the 90's. In my opinion the only "ingredient" missing in this compilation was to leave out the 80's Van Van hit "Sandunguera". Had they included this hit song, this compilation would've easily gone gold or platinum!

Not worth it2
Unless you are a super fan of Los Van Van and know their music, this CD is really bad. I am a Cuban salsa lover, but this CD certainly did not meet one third of my expectations.
