Customer Reviews
Man! How could anyone put such a superb box set down!
Ernest had some of the greatest recordings ever in the 50's and this set has them all from 1954-1960. His remakes of his old hits from 1958/59 are truly outstanding! One thing I love about artists like Ernest Tubb is the way they update their older sound to a newer stereo sound and there are 24 celections starting on disc 3. You even get to hear some backings by the Jordanaires and the Anita Kerr singers which is most unusual for Ernest Tubb since he usually never used backings on his songs. They are excellent remakes I'll tell you! This set is highly recommended!
Everything from 1954-1960
Bear Family Records has put together some excellent cd packages over the years. This set features Ernest Tubbs' career during the years when rock-n-roll was causing a stir and taken away many from the country audience. Ernest held his own experimenting with rock and pop influences to a certain degree but never straying away from his trademark honky tonk sound. Billy Byrd picks it out on most of the cuts and Leon Rhodes takes it from there in 1960 (and of course Buddy Emmons on steel). So set up two glasses and listen to the Texas Troubadour
This is the real thing
If you're looking to buy an Ernest Tubb collection at this Amazon site, this Yellow Rose of Texas set is the only one you should consider; this is the only one of all the collections offered here (at least among those that offer song previews) that features the original recordings. Compare these recordings of Walkin' the Floor, Driftwood on the River and Filipino Baby with those on the other collections on this site and you'll see these are the original recordings featuring Billy Byrd and the original Texas Troubadors. The others are just lame remakes that don't even come close to doing justice to the original recordings.
