Editorial Reviews
Album Description
5 CD box set of Merle's complete recordings for Tally and Capitol from 1962 to 1968 (except the Jimmie Rodgers tribute available separately). The classic early hits are here, like Strangers, Swinging Doors, The Bottle Let Me Down, I Threw Away The Rose, Branded Man, Sing Me Back Home, Lonesome Fugitive, and Mama Tried, but the importance of this set is that it shows Merle's developing artistry in the album tracks, abandoned cuts, and rare singles. Other sets skim the surface; this one tells the complete story.
Customer Reviews
Haggard at his BEST!!
This box set is a MUST-HAVE for any music fan. If you think Garth Brooks and Shania Twain are country singers, then this box set will set you straight. You owe it to yourself. Haggard is one of the finest voices ever in ANY kind of music. In country music, I might rank him a close second to Johnny Cash, but now is not the time to entertain such silly debates. These songs are timeless and transcendental. They will lift you up to another place.
For Hags Everywhere.
I gave this set 5 stars only because it doesn't go higher.
This is an outstanding collection of the Hag's early work. Much of his Talley recordings are here as well as his capitol. It covers 1962-1968 It is a great companion to his "Down Every Road" Which focus on his later work. Some of the hightlights are the false starts which give you a tiny peak into the recording session. Hag's voice was just as rich then as it is now.
For the true Haggard Fan
This box set is a must have for the true Haggard and country music fan. Nashville has long turned it's collective back on Haggard - and he seems to have reciprocated. Unfortunately this has left a void in young people's appreciation of what has come before the Toby Keiths and Trace Adkins' of the world. This set gives not only a great insight into who Merle Haggard is, but also into the evolution of some of the many classics he's written and recorded. We get several inside glimpses into the recording process of the classics through the outtakes that are included here. Untamed Hawk shows you why Haggard will always be a legend in country music and why he's one of the "First Name" club members of country music along with Hank, Johnny and Lefty. The only drawback is that this is a Bear Family collection and as such the artist receives precious little, if any, of the money you pay out for it.
