The Commercial Evolution of Ayers
Roy Ayers and his ever-expanding Ubiquity finally received noteable commercial success with this 1975 funk classic. Guest vocalist Chicas shines on Ashford & Simpson's mellow "Take All The Time You Need", while "down-home" lyrics are sung with gusto on "Spirit of The Doo Doo" and "Life Is Just A Moment". Tight arrangements complement Ayers powerful vibes on the title track, "Evolution" and "The Black Five", the three instrumentals on this album. "Brother Green (The Disco King)" is the weakest track on the album with its dumb lyrics (Do it brother/Do it brother/Do it brother/Do it/Brother Green/The Disco King...)and dated disco arrangement. Only the cool Arp string ensemble at the bridge saves this track from being a total waste.

The Spirit of Doo Doo Lives on ! ! !
Even in its hey day, there was something futuristic sounding about the space funk of this brilliant jazzmaster, and almost 20 years later you hear a whole new wave of groups keeping the sound alive... and it sounds as fresh as ever...take groups like Groove Collective for example.

This is a consistantly bumping album that is very typical of the late '70s Fantasty Jazz label sound, and the stuff Donald Byrd, The Blackbyrds and a lot of crossover Jazz artists were doing. Urban, Jazzy and amply danceable.

I have to say, I've had this particular copy of the CD for almost 6 years now... a rarity for me... all my CDs usually end up getting lent out and wind up MIA... but trust me... no one TOUCHES this one...the grooves are deep, engrossing and bumping... and there's so much to explore.

If you dig this CD, check out ... check out a Japanese pop group called ORIGINAL LOVE which picked up that Jazzy vibe and don't forget Gil Scott Heron's collaborations with Brian Jackson and Les McCann's electric stuff from the '70s! ! !

Mellow, funky sh** that stinks (in a good way)
Roy Ayers is definatley one of the more sampled funksters of the 70's and his grooves can be found on countless modern hip-hop tracks. This is probably his best, or at least most consistent, album. All the tracks here are really funky, in a mellow, jazzy kind of way. Brother Green the disco king is a classic breakbeat and the other tracks on here really cook too. A perfect album for someone looking to be initiated into the funky world of Roy Ayers.
