Rarely has religious music in the United States sounded as thrilling as on this collection. The bluegrass playing is stellar, full of bullet-fast strumming, picking, and bowing. All the major bluegrass figures are here, from the Stanley Brothers to the Louvin Brothers to Lester Flatt & Earl Scruggs. And while their tunes are generally more programmatic, none of them wanders far from the high, lonesome core, the yearning wail that so enriches the music on this collection's predecessor, The Best of Bluegrass Volume One: Standards. These are all nominally religious tunes, but they are also virtuoso displays of talent and musical smarts in that oh-so-American genre where the string group handles harmony, rhythm, and melody while also bolstering stunning vocal performances. --Andrew Bartlett

Americana at its best5
This collection of gospel bluegrass recordings is a must for any blugrass fan. All the standards and many others are here on one CD that won't disappoint the serious bluegrass listener. I was especially impressed to find "Jesus Hits Like an Atom Bomb" on this CD which I have only seen on the "Atomic Cafe" soundtrack of the early '80s. The sound quality is excellent considering many of these recordings are from the late 40's and early 50's. A must for your collection. Enjoy!

Classic Bluegrass Gospel5
These are vintage recordings of some of bluegrass music's best-loved gospel songs. These are all Mercury singles released between 1948 and 1960. As such, the recording quality is a little rough around the edges at times, but nonetheless moving. Alongside bluegrass giants like Flatt & Scruggs, the Stanley Brothers, the Osborne Brothers and the Louvin Brothers are lesser (but no less powerful) artists as Carl Sauceman and the Masters Family. The only song that seems somewhat out of place is the 1950 recording by Lowell Blanchard's "Jesus Hits Like the Atom Bomb," which was used in the 1982 cult film "The Atomic Cafe." Otherwise, this is a superb collection of classic gospel recordings at a bargain price. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Heavenly Bluegrass4
This is pretty good pickin'. Some tracks are a little difficult to hear but in general this is good ole time gospel pickin' bluegrass.
