A wonderful collection for the classroom4
As a history teacher, I am constantly on the lookout for music that can help to bring the past alive. This CD does a wonderful job for both the American Revolution and the Civil War. While the country twang of some of these pieces may jar young sensibilities, students quickly warm to the authentic verve of the performances. The Revolutionary period includes such chestnuts as the "Riddle Song" (and actually omits "Yankee Doodle"), but also some jokes of the period, including a hysterical folk version of a taming of a shrew. The Civil War period is split between northern and southern songs. There are the standards "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and "Dixie," but also more obscure songs like "Lincoln and Liberty" and "Goober Peas." All in all, a great tool, especially for the price.

Fond memories...5
I am so excited to have found this. My dad had a collection of records when I was growing up and this particular group of songs and tales was part of the collection. The music and the voices bring back such fond memories of my childhood and my dad retelling the stories to us at bedtime.

Wonderful!5
This CD is great! I highly reccomend it. The music on the CD is well played on traditional instruments, and the vocalists manage to capture the spirit of the songs. As you listen to "Cumberland Gap" you can almost see a group of confederate soldiers singing as they marched along. When "The Swapping Song" begins to play you can see a group of men sitting around an old general store or blacksmiths shop. Its a wonderful collection of traditional songs. This is a CD that my grandparents and I can listen to together.
