This album is a great sampling of Lady Day's entire career.
For those unable to decide where to begin when buying a Billie Holiday album, This is Jazz #15 is a great place. I was extremely frustrated when I saw all the quintissential volumes. I decided to get an album that had songs released throughout Billie's career-a sampling for future purchases. The music is great, and her singing is superb. There's nothing "new" here, it is just organized well.

The THIS IS JAZZ series, originally issued by SONY music in the mid-'90s, presents 20 different luminaries of the genre performing many of their best songs. All albums include multi-page booklets that contain session personnel and recording dates, as well as nicely written bios.
The majority of tracks on BILLIE HOLIDAY are from the 1930s, although two here were made in 1958, the year before her death. The set includes Lady Day's first version of her self-penned signature piece, "God Bless The Child." Condition of source material as well as transfer quality on THIS IS JAZZ 15 * BILLIE HOLIDAY are excellent. A most enjoyable collection.
