More than any other band, the Gipsy Kings are responsible for the renewed interest in gypsy music, and this is the album that broke them through to the international mainstream. Although their carefully crafted music is not "pure" gypsy, their impassioned performances create a window for the uninitiated into the deeper world of flamenco and other styles. If you're not a purist, the Gipsy Kings provide powerful, highly contagious, mostly acoustic music that may represent a new form of contemporary gypsy music for the masses; or you can view it as pure pop. This disc lays down their trademark mix of guitars, handclaps, and percussion over 12 varied tracks ranging from intense dance numbers to passionate love songs such as "Un Amor." Linking it all together are the throaty, emotional vocals, notably those of Nicolas Reyes, evoking the smoky campfires of his underprivileged brethren where this highly polished music originated. --Derek Rath

Gipsy Kings
Gipsy Kings first release was certainly a success. This Album is simply brilliant and probably the most classical of all their albums. Standout tracks are: Bamboleo, Bem Bem Maria, Un Amour, A Mi Manera, and the super hit Djobbi Djobba. The Album also contains four instrumental works which are all very good. My personal favourite is Moorea. Very Recommended.
Music Lovers - Don't Miss This One!
I'm a music lover. I have limited exposure to Flamenco (Montoya, Segovia) and the syle of Gypsy music from the region of Central Europe so my review is not about Flamenco or Gypsy music. I first heard a song (Bamboleo) from this CD in a restaurant in West Africa in 1992. I went straight to the bar, got the groups name, then straight to the record store when I got back to the U.S.
In 1994 I saw them in concert and they were just unbelievable. They only played one encore but the audience was so wound up we would have stayed for another complete concert. Five minutes after leaving the concert I realized that I didn't have anything left - I was drained. Another encore would have added nothing to the evening and I was actually glad they stopped when they did. It was one of the most memorable concerts I've ever attended. All that energy and most of the songs are on this CD. If Bamboleo or Djobi, Djoba don't get you moving someone better call 911. In contrast, Moorea brings out the 'quiet' passion. The vocals are raw. By raw I mean not highly polished or 'pretty' but very sincere, honest and passionate, whether it's the high energy or quiet type. You don't need to speak Spanish to get the message.
This is a great gift. This is the first time I've purchased it online and am happy to share my review with others. They are a joy. If music lovers of every ilk and hue can't get turned on by the Gypsy Kings that number again is 911.
My First One. One of the Best!
"Gipsy Kings" was the first Gipsy Kings CD I ever had, and it is still one of my favorite ones. This CD is a good place to start if you are just getting into listening to this fantastic group. My favorite track on this CD has to be "A Mi Manera", better known as "My Way". I think that Frank Sinatra did it better than anybody else, but this version is excellent as well. Other great tracks include "Bamboleo", "Bem, Bem, Maria" and...well...the rest of them. This is an excellent CD, and it really gives you an idea about how good the Gipsy Kings are.
