The four Foresters--Kathy, June, Kim, and Christy--grew up singing in church in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. But their sound is closer to the polished pop of the McGuire Sisters than the rousing harmonies of gospel quartets. That's not to downplay their appeal: the four present a charming jaunty form of melodic pop country spiked with light swing. Their harmonies own a compelling warmth. And their solos suggest they're all capable vocalists--especially Kim, whose husky tone recalls Wynonna Judd. Greatest Hits, released in 1989, draws only from the group's initial three albums. But it features the hits "That's What You Do (When You're in Love)," "I'd Choose You Again," and Sincerely," making it the best career retrospective available. --Michael McCall
Customer Reviews
Excellent CD, but some good hits were left off
This is a great CD of one of the great female country groups of the eighties and nineties. The only problem I have with it is that some very good hits were left off. Hits like "Lyin' In His Arms Again", "Mama's Never Seen Those Eyes", and "Men". My feeling is that if you are going to make a "greatest hits" CD, please, make sure that all of your hits are on there before you include songs that were not really "great" hits, like "Don't You"
An excellent summary of their career
This greatest hits collection contains 10 of their biggest hits form 1985-1989, although quite a few of their hits that were released from this time period are missing, notably "Lying In His Arms Again," their remake of the Brenda Lee classic "Too Many Rivers," and "Mama's Never Seen Those Eyes." What is on here is some beautiful 4 part harmony that is just as influenced by vocal pop and gospel as it is influenced by country. Some of the highlights on this compilation are their first hit "(That's What You Do) When You're In Love," "(I'd Choose) You Again," "Lonely Alone," "Sincerely", which is a remake of the McGuire Sisters' classic, Letter Home and manymore. All of these highlights plus more make this an excellent CD to add to your collection. Aside from the McGuire Sisters, Chordettes and other female vocal groups from the 1950's, female harmony in the 1980's doesn't get better than this.
Traditional southern country music at its best!
Although the Forester Sisters were at their peak before I became a country music fan, over the past few years I have "discovered" them and their beautiful vocals. Today's modern country and rock lack the soul and feeling that comes across so vividly in this collection. Songs like Letters Home, Lonely Alone, and You Again make this albulm a must have for any true country music fan! :)
