it moves! it bounces!
I was thrilled to find it on CD... once upon a time, I borrowed the vinyl, and since then it's kept me going on too many long drives. energy raising: careful not to speed.
this is real music, not newage-rhymes-with-sewage. doumbek drumming to move more than snakes.
Flutes for Charming the Naag
Performed by Igbal Jogi and His Party (Jogis are traditional snake-charmers in India), this is indeed a very authentic sample of the folkloric music of northern India and Pakistan. Performing on the pungi or been, a sort of double-reeded flute similar to the shehnai, the music is accompanied by traditional Hindustani percussion. In spite of the title, this album includes everything from variations on classical Hindustani ragas to Sindhi folk songs and everything in between. It is very much an example of the sorts of sounds you might still be able to find in small villages in Pakistan today, or amongst the ancestors of the Rromany (Gypsies) in the region. Unfortunately, the only downside is that while the music is phenomenal, even trance inducing, the liner notes are disappointingly thin, giving little information on Igbal Jogi and his music. It's a pity too, because I'd be very interested in hearing more of his work. That aside, if your looking for a "really Indian sounding" CD, this is your place to go. Everyone from aficionados of classical Hindustani music to tribal bellydancers looking to spice up their acts to folks who just want to explore the sounds of another culture will love this release. On of the most spirited Indian/Pakistani CDs in my collection.

I feel lucky that I even heard about this CD (thanks to Rafi Zabor and Taintradio for that). I get the impression this is a re-issue of some existing album, but as another reviewer pointed out, the information with the CD is quite thin. Very energetic and engrossing music. The recording quality is not so great but it does not detract (very much) from my enjoyment of this music.
