Has it been 10 years ?
This CD recording is Julian Bream's last studio recording (1995), at least as far as we mere guitar mortals know of. And since the maestro has retired from the concert stage in 2002, and has stated on more than one occasion his rather dislike for recording in general. (With the exception of a recent DVD release in which Bream still played amazingly well.) I'm assuming this it folks!!
The sound recording is exceptional, the tone of Bream's 1940 Hauser guitar is breathtaking. The music itself is quite good as well. This is Breams second recording of The Paganini Sonata and surpasses his earlier 60's recording. Especially nice is Breams reworking (in part) of Jose's Sonata. I've heard none better. Bream's interpration of Castelnuovo-Tedesco's Sonata is only matched by Segovia's 1959 recording of it. All in all a more than worthy final (?) effort. Bravo !
