six fat dutchmen greatest hits
Great songs, lousy sound quality. How come when music is moved from an lp or tape or some other source to a cd, they have such a hard time getting good quality sound?
Really great Old-Time music
This reminded me of why I and many others considered these guys the best Old-Time band ever! You ain't heard nothin' yet until you hear Harold "The Bard of the Bass Horn"Loeffelmacher soloing on the Clarinet Polka. And the roller-rink organ on You Can't Be True Dear made me want to dig out the old skates. The sound is fine, although at times they get a little carried away with the marvels of stereophonic sound and toss the melody back and forth from right to left every few bars. The polka bands of today would have trouble getting a booking in the New Ulm of yesterday. Maybe Fezz Fritsche will surface soon?
going the way of the do-do bird
I was originally from Wisconsin and grew up with the great oompah bands,but i'm think they are getting to be a rare breed.The Fat Dutchmen still have that old oompah sound,reeds,brass,tuba,polkas just don't sound right played anyother way,can you imagine clarinet polka played on an accordian or a squeeze box? All the old oompah band leaders are retiring,seems there's no one to take there place,now all they seem to have is a accordian,a drum and a tuba,sometime,heaven forbid,they have thier whole family and relatives all lined up pumping away on squeeze boxes.I'm not against accordians but the should be used with descreation such as in this CD.All you polka lovers this is as good as it gets,i know this CD will warm the heart of any old oompah band lover.I think our last hope is getting the old German oompah bands in the German band section.
