In Blues We Trust
I dig the Stones as much as anyone (*Let It Bleed* is one of my favorite albums), but I think those of you who compared this album to the original Stones versions are missing the point. The caption on the cover says it clearly: "This Ain't No Tribute." What it is is something more complex, and much more interesting. It takes songs by the Stones--the crown princes of rock and roll--and gives them back to the tradition that inspired them in the first place. The Stones paid tribute to the blues through their songs, and they made something entirely new and beautiful out of the traditional blues. The artists in this compilation bring these songs back home to the blues tradition, and create something new and beautiful in the process. (You'll also hear the close kinship between blues and country, a kinship that is often overlooked in the artificial division between modern blues, country, and rock and roll.) It's an example of what's so wonderful about the musical process as a whole--the organic melding of traditions and innovations to create beauty in sonic form. This album is a lesson in music history, but it's also just some damn good music. Get it, listen, learn, and love!
It only gets better
I've had this cd for about 7 years now and every now and then pull it out for a listen and each time I leave with a new song that I feel is the best and a need to search out a few cds from the artist who cover them . The last time was about a month ago and it hasn't been out of my car since. "You Can't Always Get What You Want"...brilliant. "Sway"...unforgettable. "Beast of Burdon"...outstanding. This last time has been "Ventilator Blues" by the late Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown.
I don't like to say that these guys did the Rolling Stones better than Mick and the gang, but on these songs...they did.
NOT the Rolling Stones
As an old fan of both the delta blues and the Rolling Stones, I prefer the original work of the the Stones to this collection. Like many Stones fans (I believe), one of the things I like best about them is their gritty edge; that edge is distinctly lacking here. Though this disc might be fun for someone who has only the old studio recordings for comparison, it pales next to the recent live recordings of the Stones. If you haven't already, pick up "Stripped" and hear the songs of the Stones as only the Stones can perform them.
