The first two discs include most of Schumann's early piano masterpieces (except the Fantasy, op. 17) in their first notable recordings. Alfred Cortot sometimes splashed wrong notes about, but most of his playing here is technically strong and musically very convincing. The third disc isn't quite as useful; the concerto collaboration isn't very strong, and the great recording of the Trio is readily available elsewhere (in EMI's Cortot-Thibaud-Casals set 64057-2). Still, there is a lot of great Schumann-playing here, in quite respectable sound for 1927-37, demonstrating the art of one of the great Romantic pianists in his prime. --Leslie Gerber
