Diva Assoluta
This is the first recording of Edita Gruberova that I heard and it is still my favorite. Her renditions of "The Bell Song" in Delibes' LAKME, "Juliet's Waltz" in Gounod"s ROMEO ET JULIETTE, and "Una voce poco fa" in Rossini's IL BARBIERI DI SIVIGLIA are outstanding. Let alone the "Mad Scenes" of Thomas' HAMLET and Donizetti's LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR, which are truly breathtaking. Her coloratura range is at her best. I can't recall how many times I've heard this CD, alone or with friends, and her interpretations of the haunted Ophelia and Lucia still electrify me.
