Here's a great idea for a recording--and it really works. Beginning with a dramatic reading of Thomas Deloney's famous ballad "The Queenes Visiting of the Campe at Tilsburie," accompanied by an anticipatory drum cadence, this program recalls music popular in England during the time of the defeat of the Spanish Armada. It's a fantastic mix of primarily instrumental music--bass Richard Wistreich performs the opening narration and sings on two other tracks-- that includes many anonymous tunes in arrangements by members of the York Waits. The documentation on the music is informative, and those bagpipes, hurdy- gurdies, three-holed pipes, and sackbuts are something else. --David Vernier

Another great performance
This CD has quickly become one of my very favorites. As always with the York Waits, the program is very enjoyable and the added bonus of Richard Wistreich's singing and recitation is a special treat. My only quibble with this CD (and it is a minor one) is the balance between selections. Relatively quiet numbers are followed by very loud ones, so one is forever having to turn the volume up and down to accomodate. That said, if you like vernacular English music of the 16th century this CD would be an excellent addition to your library.
Outstanding
The York Waits are one of the best early music consorts around--every bit the equal of David Munrow, I would say. They have chosen an excellent and varied program.
