Customer Reviews
A truly gifted composer and player. GREAT music.
Botti is as gifted a composer as he is a trumpet player. As a composer, Botti reaches real, heartfelt depth. The pieces on First Wish, Midnight..., and Slowing Down the World are an interesting and original blend of rockish ballads, mellow funk, and blues-ish soul that no other modern trumpet player is even close to accomplishing. The occasional background guitars are vaguely reminiscint of U2's guitar work, yet completely original, and the piano is very well mixed with Botti's horn playing. I love ALL his CDs, and I'm glad I don't have to pick just one.
As a player, Botti is very clean and accurate, yet always soulful. His truly artful phrasing, with occasional glides and bends, is perfect - never gimicky, always heartfelt and masterful - just right.
On a side note, the ladies always respond VERY well to all of Botti's music on a date. Slow dancing is a very easy sell with Botti's ballads playing. That alone says a lot about the affect Botti's music has, but Botti's music can have some real talented groove to it too. I hope this player can create 100 CDs. I'll own them all.
Stunning debut by today's hotest trumpeter
This is one of the best instrumental (mostly) albums I've heard. Botti has such great tone and control. I saw him open for Fourplay in Monterey a while back, and have bought every thing by him. This is the best in my opinion
Some of the most astonishing, haunting music in the world.
Hearing Chris Botti on the trumpet in "First Wish" is like the moment you first saw the Rosetta Stone, when an entirely new world opened up before you -- magnificent, subtle, haunting, unearthly and yet perfectly tuned to the deepest joy and pain a human being can feel. This recording, and Botti's subsequent recordings, rise to the top of any stack. Here is a musician who goes to the heart of everything and knows far more about our lives than can be spoken.
