Outstanding baroque music
Johann Adolf Hasse (1699-1783) was a very productive composer; he wrote church music, chamber music, concertos and about 100 operas. He hold a position as Kapellmeister in Dresden (1734-64), and he was married to Faustina Bordoni (1701-81), a very famous soprano at that time. The Salve Regina in E flat major is the finest piece; beautifully performed by Bonney and Fink, who brings out devoutness and pensiveness in their singing. The original instruments ensemble Musica Antiqua Cologne and their conductor Reinhard Goebel gives a sparkling performance with brisk tempi. This CD is a must for the baroque listener.
best Hasse in the catalog?
This recording is stellar. A delight even after ten years of repeated listenings, Hasse's music in the hands of Goebel reveals an unsurpassed level of inspiration and lyrical genius (as opposed to the regular levels of inspiration and lyrical genius apparent in other performances of Hasse's music - a note for the uninitiated: he was a remarkably gifted composer, even according to Mozart). Bernarda Fink is flawless. There is not a better recording of the A Major Salve Regina to be heard. The motet "Chori Angelici" is also especially good! Fink or MAK fans are likely in ownership of this title already, but its appeal should entice any fan of excellent singing, sacred music, or baroque vocal music in general. Buy a copy while you still can.
