Ireland's Golden Tenor
Think of John McCormack, with more modern recording technology. I do not mean that Frank Patterson sounds just like John McCormack. But there is the same purity of tone, and the same "Irish-ness."
The recording begins with a rollicking "My Irish Molly O," that suggests we are in store for a lot of party-popping music. But then, it surprises by going immediately to, and continuing with, more ballad type material, some familiar and some not. We hear the nostalgia of "The Green Green Grass of Home," and the wonderful high note ending of "Galway Bay." The recording finishes with a beautiful "Now Is the Hour," which I never considered an Irish number; but it is a great finish none the less.
The accompaniment by the Irish Promenade Orchestra supports the soloist at all times, never trying to overshadow, always remembering that this is a vocal recording, not an orchestral.
This is a valued addition to my collection of Irish music.
