Customer Reviews
from schubert's last months
One of three great sonatas written as schubert knew he was about to die. His biographer says in his last weeks he corrected scores while lucid, and "sang ceaselessly" when delirious from his brain syphilis. These are the equal of Beethoven's late sonatas, i.e. unsurpassed; and op. 958 receives a worthy performance from Goode comparable to his wonderful versions of those. And listen to track 5!! - an 80-second waltz that says it all, too deeply for tears. A desert island disc.
Memory of Tanglewood
My first trip to Tanglewood, I discovered this CD in tape form at the Tanglewood Gift Shop, and I listened to it incessantly while I drove throughout the Berkshires. It was literally a transporting experience! I also bought the A major sonata D. 958 by Richard Goode and loved it, too, abundantly. I replaced the tapes with CDs recently, and they are treasures to be cherished. Richard Goode's playing perfectly captures the curvilinear design of Schubertian song. And his sensitivity to this music is beyond compare.
