Nightmare at the Casbah
Musical taste is subjective, but "Night at the Casbah" is a stinker for anyone who isn't hearing-impaired. As an oriental dance performer & instructor, I'm on the prowl for new (or old) tunes. Honestly, I'm glad this CD was inexpensive: sadly, it's cheaper to keep it!
The music sounds dated and the recording quality is poor. I've plenty of recordings done "in the field", and they sound better than this "studio" mix. There's nothing classic about this recording - no Wahab, no Attresh: "ma'feesh" (nothing) recognizable. The producer must equate "authentic, exotic Arabic music" with anything featuring Arabic insturmentation. Unfortunately, beating up a kanoun or honking into a mizmar doesn't make it music!
Oriental dancers, save your money for world class quality recordings such as "Silences of the Palace", or "Charcoal Gipsies". Fellow Arab-Americans, stick to Warda, Amro Diab or Ehab Tawfik!
Since I'm keeping "Night at the Casbah", I can put it to good use: Next time the neighbor's kids blast us with Hansen - I'm now prepared to respond in kind with "Night at the Casbah".
Don't Waste Your Money
This CD is very disappointing. The sound quality is poor and the singer is mediocre. This is a poor representation of what really good Arabic music should sound like.

I am extremely disappointed with this CD and the set it came. It is very monotonous. With Jilliana on the cover, I definitely would have thought it would have been good, since she is a phenomenal dancer. It is very boring and not good to use for any belly dancing I do in the restaurants or family parties or in my class instruction.
