One Of The Greats At Her Best5
Leyla Gencer, the great Turkish diva only made a handful of studio recordings. (A mixed program of Italian arias for Fonit-Cetra in the late 1950s, an all Donizetti program for the same label in the 1970s and a song recital, mostly Chopin, in the 1980s.) She never recorded a complete opera under studio conditions. This is a real pity. In her best years, 1950s-70s, she was a first rate interpreter, a superb technician and the possessor of a lovely voice. She covered an astounding range of repertoire from the Baroque to at least conservative moderns.
You have to rely on live performances to hear her at her best.
Myto's third volume devoted to her is the most interesting, including as it does excerpts from her fine performances of Weinberger's SCHWANDA THE BAGPIPER and Prokofiev' THE FIERY ANGEL. The excerpts from SIMON BOCCANEGRA, LA BATTAGLIA DI LEGNANO and WERTHER are really lovely.
The sound recordings are variable, but this is the genuine article on a great diva !
