Of the many figures in the "exotica" music revival, Lyman consistently made music that tourists would expect from a tiki cocktail lounge. This Kauai native and vibraphonist left the Martin Denny Group in the early '60s to forge out on his own, garnering his first and only Top 40 hit with the song "Yellow Bird" in 1961. This, his second album, includes the soft and dreamy title song, but it also is an audio panorama of Lyman's range--from such "native" offerings as "Bamboo Tamboo," continental tunes such as "Arrivederci Roma," and sentimental American favorites including "Sweet and Lovely." Here, the unusually crisp sound quality and stereo separation (characteristic of the Lyman albums on the Hi-Fi label) are a refreshing change from the more dreary and "centered" recordings of today. --Joseph Lanza
From the Label
In YELLOW BIRD, Lyman pays special tribute to the signature sound that brought him fame and includes vocals from actual birds, as well as some interactive birdcalls from Lyman and Kramer. The album originally swooped down on the scene in 1961 and quickly took flight to #4 on the Billboard charts. With tracks like "Havah Nagilah," a monument to exoticism, Ravel's "Bolero," a driving climax of percussion, and "John Henry," a lounged-up version of the American folk standard, the album contains some of the most influential sounds of the original cocktail era.

Absolutely Beautiful
So beautiful and relaxing. You can feel the gentle surf glide onto the sandy beaches. You can feel the gentle tradwinds cross your face. You can feel Arthur Lyman caress the keys of his marimbas and vibes. This music brings back so many beautiful memories of a beautiful place and a beautiful time.
Arthur Lyman "Yellow Bird"
You're $$ is well spent! A talented artist... too bad more people can't see the talent...Keep up the good work!
Polynesian Paradise
Soft warm breezes float over the beach and carry fragrant floral aroma's to the hammock your lying in while sipping a fruity rum drink in a coconut half as bare breasted hula girls giggle near by. Sounds like a slice of heaven. And almost every song on this CD conjures up those images. Even the tunes that are not Polynesian in origin seem to be given a tropical touch. Even the cover art and liner photos of beautiful brown skin girls, exotic flowers and band members in Hawaiian shirts and wearing lays around there necks make you feel as though you listening to them live in Honolulu. Very good stuff and I recommend this CD to everyone, even those who don't enjoy Exotica.
