A First-Rate Celtic Collection
Green Linnet is to Celtic music what Alligator is to the blues or Sugar Hill is to bluegrass. As such, you can count on all the music on this collection being top-notch. As a previous reviewer noted, this is not solo highland bagpipes but they are featured prominently in most of the selections. You also get some of the label's most highly respected artists like the Tannahill Weavers (who have been recording for nearly a quarter century), as well as relative newcomers like Wolfstone (who have released seven albums since their 1991 debut).
The playing on all selections (which are all instrumentals) is first-rate. In addition to featuring the bagpipes, other instrumentalists (guitar, fiddle, whistles) are allowed to shine through.
This is Celtic music at its best and at a bargain price this music is a joy to listen to. If this is your first introduction to the music of Green Linnet, check out any of the other budget price "Celtophile" series, or any of the 2-CD anthologies ("Joyful Noise" and "Twentieth Anniversary Collection"). RECOMMENDED
Music for the bagpipe but not by the bagpipe.
Very disappointing for those who love to hear the Great Highland Pipe. Most of the songs have too many instruments to count, and if the pipes are playing you can't hear them clearly. If you are wanting to hear bagpipe music played on the GHP, look elsewhere.
If you ever thought the highland pipes weren't versatile . .
This CD exhibits just how versatile the highland pipes are! There's some real cool crossover stuff here that will make you a lover of the pipes, if you aren't already one! Hey, get with it - this is where it's at! Phil Cunningham is alive and well on track 6 in a beautiful rendition of Leaving Glen Affric. There's something for everyone here.
