Anyway, this two-cd set of SCHUBERT LIEDER FROM HISTORICAL RECORDINGS is a wonderful tour through the who's-who in Schubert singing in the '40s and '50s. Many of the singers were known primarily for their schubert lieder (Eliz, Schumann, Lotte Lehman, Gerhardt Hursch, Heinrich Schlusnus, Peter Anders, Eliz Schwartzkopf, Frida Leider, Axel Schiotz) but others were heavyweight Wagnerian thunderers like Josef Greindl, Hans Hotter, Kirsten Flagstad, Kirstin Thorborg, Margarete Klose, Rosette Anday, Herbert Janssen, Josef von Manowarda and Friedrich Schorr, or high-powered tenors like Jussi Bjorling and Richard Tauber, or veterans from the operetta stage like Erna Berger, Georg Hann, Karl Schmitt-Walter. A great variety of schubert singing styles.
Don't overlook Lula Mysz-Gmeiner's haunting ballad ("Der Zwerg") or Karl Erb's glittering ode.
