Great recording, with flaws
This recording would have merited 5 stars, if it weren't for the big disappointment of Corelli: he was evidently not in top form that evening, and forced his voice throughout the opera. Unfortunately, this proved contageous, with Waechter also shouting his way through his part.
The highlight of the recording is the confrontation between Phillip and the Grand Inquisitor- the best rendition if this scene I have ever heard. Ghiaurov is in great form, and one can only describe Talvela as superb; the tension between the two men is amazing- far better than in the studio recording with the same two artists.
Verrett dramatically and vocally gives a wonderful interpretation of Eboli. Janovitz copes well with her part. The conducting is good, and sound quality very acceptable.
It's worth buying the recording, just to hear Verrett, Talvela, and Ghiaurov.
