A 1964 television spin-off from the 1963 movie Flipper, Flipper--Season One is an adventure series that features extensive underwater photography and intriguing story lines involving a widowed park ranger, his two sons, and a clever dolphin named Flipper. This first season of Flipper finds brothers Sandy (Luke Halpin) and Bud (Tommy Norden), their father Park Ranger Porter Ricks (Brian Kelly), and their dolphin Flipper posted at the Coral Key Park and Marine Preserve where they're charged with upholding the law and responding to a variety of predicaments ranging from divers injured by shark attacks, to protecting visitors from incoming hurricanes, rescuing zoo animals from a sinking ship, and fighting congressional battles for continued funding to ensure the very existence of their marine preserve. While Bud's and Sandy's impulsiveness sometimes get them into trouble, the boys and their father can be counted upon to remain clear-headed in times of crisis. More often than not, though, it's Flipper who fulfills the most crucial role in any given rescue attempt. Guest stars are numerous and include Andy Devine, Margaret Hayes, Dan Chandler, and Ric Applewhite. The underwater photography of marine life was cutting-edge in 1964 and holds up well to this day, providing a fascinating look at trained and instinctive dolphin behavior and marine ecosystems and, while some of the story lines may seem a bit dated to today's audiences, the bigger issues like marine preservation and doing what is right still ring true. Childhood adventure, peril, and suspense pervade each of the 30 half-hour episodes in this first season. Flipper--Season One promises to leave adults born in the nineteen-fifties and nineteen-sixties reminiscing fondly about their own childhoods and humming the Flipper theme song--what's more, their children (and perhaps grandchildren) will enjoy the program right alongside them and are more than likely to join in wholeheartedly on the refrain "Flipper, Flipper, faster than lightning. . . ." Flipper is great adventure fun !
I have several seasons of Flipper on video, but our young daughter is wearing those out. This DVD first season is just in time and a must have for us.
Being a native of Florida, my brothers and I grew up with this show. We were the same age as Sandy and Bud when it was on originally. It has action, adventure, and it's more realistic than the tv shows kids usually watch today. This show is not dumbed down at all.
Most of the show is filmed outside, and even teaches conservation and respect for nature.
Amazing Transfer
I'll echo others here, and say that this is a truly amazing transfer! This is the best looking 1960s show I've seen on dvd yet, and it's better than plenty of recent shows that have come out on dvd. The edges and colors are so crisp and vivid--must be seen to be believed!
There's no doubt that this is a show for kids, but I'm enjoying it as an adult. This show is just plain relaxing. No cellphones, no computers, no traffic jams or high-speed car chases, no demons or superpowers, no serial killers--there's just the ocean, beaches, trees, park rangers, boys, and a very cool dolphin...and some sharks and poachers, of course, but hey, you have to some kind of dramatic tension.
These are the much hated two-sided discs, there's no booklet or additional information, and no real special features--it's a bare bones set. But as I said--it's gorgeous to look at and relaxing, very relaxing. When you pop in a disc to watch an episode or two, the tensions of the day dissolve away and you start smiling. Younger kids will love it, I'm sure, and there's nothing to fear here for any parents.
A Truly Wonderful Show.....
The Dvds Are Great, Wonderful Picture & Sound. The Show Is Magical With Terrific Stories And Very Fine Actors. Brian Kelly Gives The Show It's Heart & Soul!!! I Can't Wait For Season Two!
