Album Description
This album was produced by public demand. For centuries legends grew around the bagpipe, the most haunting musical instrument on earth. For the first time an album celebrates, through song, the influence of the pipes as an instrument of dance and joy, as well as an instrument of war and remembrance. Interest in the pipes around the world is tremendous, there is hardly a country where they cannot be heard. In Canada and the United States both the Highland and Uilleann pipes have become part of the culture and a distinctive 'North American Celtic' sound has developed over the past few years. A unique blend of the 'old' and the 'new' worlds has been created by the album's producers. Patrick King is a film maker of Celtic and musical subjects and Ian Lynn who started his muscial career as a keyboard player and composer working with many singers including Sheena Easton, Barbara Dickson & Gerry Rafferty, now concentrates on writing musical scores for films and TV.
While producing 'When The Pipers Play' it became apparent that the only way to re-create the sound of a hundred pipers was to use a 'hundred pipers'. The producers are therefore indebted to the commanding officers of all the Scottish Regiments for their permission in allowing the massed pipers to play exclusively on this album.
The Scotsman
'The powerful and evocative voice of Isla St Clair has produced an album of enchanting original and traditional tunes. When the Pipers Play deserves equal ranking with those other haunting pipe themes 'Mull of Kintyre' and 'Amazing Grace' (The Sunday Times)
'Her singing has acquired a new sense of dramatic emphasis, her distinctly warm clear tone and exuberance brings songs to life'
About the Artist
Isla St Clair - Her first public appearance, at an Aberdeen Folk Club, was at the tender age of ten and from that moment Isla proved she had inherited the rich singing tradition of her native North-East Scotland.
She was soon in the top rank of Scottish folksingers and touring the world. In the meantime Isla secured a second career in light entertainment and became a household name on British television and radio, before retiring to raise a faimly.
Her love of singing has drawn her back into the studios to record the songs that have been so much part of her life.
The bagpipes have a special place in Isla's heart, one of her uncles was a piper and the other a drummer, both were killed during World War II. Her fondness for North America and its history are also reflected in this album, and many of the songs combine these two sentiments for the very first time.

AWESOME!!!
This CD is fabulous. When I first heard it, it took my breath away. I recently lost my husband and I played the song "When the Pipers Play" at his funeral. It was extremely powerful. Sing on Isla! I definitely recommend this CD.
