Dave Koz crosses a number of pop boundaries on this CD, bringing tunes associated with genres from Motown ("I'll Be There") to New Country ("The Dance") into the smooth jazz orbit while somehow managing to put a personal stamp on them all. His perky soprano sax blends beautifully with Luther Vandross on "Can't Let You Go," while he and Montell Jordan add new dimensions to the pure pop of Wham's "Careless Whisper." The collaborations continue with nice guest spots by Burt Bacharach, trumpeter Chris Botti, and David Benoit, while Koz does some compelling and innovative work with multiple overdubbed saxes on the pulsing Latin beat of "Cuban Hideaway." --Adam Rains

Dave Koz always stays ahead of the pack5
It's the emotion Dave Koz's music has that sets him apart from so many other contemporary jazz musicians. THE DANCE is no exception. There's the upbeat feel good songs like Together Again, Can't Let You Go and The Bright Side, the sexy Surrender, the hauntingly beautiful Know You By Heart and Right By Your Side, and the very romantic You Are Me I Am You. Another thing that places Koz ahead of his contemporaries is his willingness to venture into fresh territory - never more so than with his OFF THE BEATEN PATH CD, but that sense of adventure and freshness is very present on THE DANCE as well. Even when Koz plays a song in a familiar genre format, he adds his own uniqueness to it making it always a delight to hear. On THE DANCE Koz takes a musically diverse group of musicians (BeBe Winans, Montell Jordan, Burt Bachrach, David Benoit, Chris Botti, Marc Antoine, and Luther Vandross) and a musically diverse group of songs (with covers of Garth Brook's The Dance, Michael Jackson's I'll Be There and George Michael's Careless Whisper along with his own Cuban Hideaway) and somehow comes out with a record that flows like a dance itself. Once it gets in the CD player it's hard to stop playing it. Koz is in his element here and it's great.

WOW OH WOW OH WOW5
It somewhat saddens me to say that THE DANCE has bumped OFF THE BEATEN PATH from my #1 all-time favorite CD (sorry rathje40@yahoo.com, but rest assured that OTBP will ALWAYS have a special place in my heart)! It's evident that Koz puts EVERYTHING into his albums...THE DANCE is no different! One can just feel the emotion in each note! When I listen to this CD, I feel happy, sad, beautiful, happy, sexy, happy, romantic, like I can dance forever, and did I mention happy? I just can't sit still listening to the whole CD, especially Cuban Hideaway! Makes it difficult to listen at work! :-) This CD almost makes listening to the radio boring. My REPEAT button has NEVER seen this much action!!! WAY TO GO DAVE!

Kenny G it's not5
I caught Dave at a smooth jazz holiday concert where he played several tracks from this release and I was taken by the sheer joy of the songs. He collaborates with some top talent, like Chris Botti, David Benoit, and Burt Bacharach, and it combines to make a wonderfully fulfilling record. Instead of the typical soprano sax whining, Dave shows his wizardry by making every song have its own feel and personality. "Together Again" is a great leadoff, but the rest of the record is even better. "Playing by Heart" (with Benoit) is touching, and BeBe Winans makes great work of the Garth Brooks tune "The Dance" All in all, Koz's best and a must have for any smooth jazz fan.
