Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com's Best of 1999
On her major-label debut, accomplished singer Yolanda Adams effortlessly mixes the sounds of deep gospel soul and smooth R&B with contemporary jazz and rap. Not just updating black gospel music, she fearlessly revives it with contemporary music--and not in any hokey way, mind you--and a timeless, unassailably intense spirituality. --Mike McGonigal
Amazon.com
Recognized in the last decade as one of modern gospel's seminal voices, Yolanda Adams is clearly poised to take up the torch from foremothers such as Mavis Staples and Aretha Franklin with her Elektra debut, Mountain High... Valley Low. Adams brings her music to a wider audience not by watering down her message, but by making a record of supreme power, conviction, and glorious beauty, incorporating elements of traditional gospel, hip-hop, jazz, and R&B into daring arrangements. "The Things We Do" is a gorgeous ballad with samples of JFK and MLK speaking some of their most famous words of commitment. And "Yeah," easily one of 1999's best R&B singles, is a masterfully ebullient song of praise and dedication marrying thick, funky beats with divinely soulful vocals. A bright and shining testament to faith in a higher power, Adams uses her extraordinary vocal prowess to uplift her listeners and to elucidate the pure joy of spiritual and musical flight. She not just crosses but banishes lines of separation. --Paige La Grone

EXPLOSIVE! RIVETING! PROVOKING! ANOINTED!
Yolanda Adams is without a doubt the leading Female Gospel Artist of this time! I sat and watched as she's grown vocally, emotionally, musically and spiritually through each of her projects. Her latest project Mountain High, Valley Low is probably the best gospel project I've heard in quite some time. Some of the standout selections are the popish Yeah, the tender Fragile Heart, the moving That Name, the Soul-stirring In the Midst of It all, a great duet with the right message (w/Kelly Price) He'll Arrive, the man himself Fred Hammond produced the rockin' Continual Praise and the rockin' closer Already Alright. Not only is it filled with a variety of musical styles but the lyrics are exceptional, the music itself is uplifting and inspiring, she is definitely singing and more importantly, she has received a spiritual endowment from the Lord (anointing) for such a time as this. Very few gospel artist projects have good packaging, good lyrics, good singing, good production and the anointing of God. That a five-fold project that very few have. However, Mrs. Adams-Crawford is the exception and I whole heartedly agree with Amazon.com. I'm happy that they have chosen her to be Artist of the Year. I just hope that those persons in charge of the Grammy Ballot has not overlooked Mrs. Adams-Crawford again. This is the project that's going to reach the masses, grab the grammy, minister to the saints and those who do not attend church. I cannot close without mentioning her live performances (Donny and Marie, Soul Train Christmasfest, Showtime at the Apollo). They have been exceptional! It's marvelous to know that mainstream is no longer associating Gospel Music with Kirk Franklin or the Winans Family (who I appreciate too) because there is a heap of rich talent in the industry and Yolanda Adams is certainly leading the pack. Ladies and Gentlemen, I urge you to purchase this cd and allow it to speak into your life. It will encourage you, it will provoke you to think on the goodness of Jesus and it will bring in a spirit of fun and laughter into the atmosphere and it's just a good piece of work. Yolanda, God Bless You and stay in the Will of the Lord. For He has indeed set you aside for such a time as this and the best is truly yet to come.
Yolanda Has Done It Again!
There are few words to describe this incredible, anointed woman. God has given her a gift to sing and she uses it to His glory. "Mountain High, Valley Low" is a wonderful mix of some great music. Yolanda uses hip-hop, R&B, jazz and of course, traditional gospel in this fabulously produced and written CD. "Time To Change", "Yeah", "That Name", "In The Midst Of It All", "The Things We Do", "He'll Arrive" and "Continual Praise" are all great songs. How could she go wrong with Richard Smallwood, Kevin Bond, Fred Hammond, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Kelly Price and Lauryn Hill on this project? Although her sound is very contemporary and progressive, Yolanda never strays from the uncomprising Word of God. This CD takes Yolanda to higher heights and into new territory and seals her place in Gospel music history.
Yolanda Adams' Greatest Hits
When a most people think of Yolanda Adams' Greatest Hits, they think of "The Battle is the Lord's," and "While Riding Through the Storm." When I think of Yolanda Adam's greatest hits, I think of "Mountain High...Valley Low." This album is by far one of the best, if not the best, collections of song Ms. Adams has ever put forth. With songs that praise the Lord as well as songs that teach us how to love one another, "Mountain High...Valley Low" will truly bless anyone who listens to it.
