Experience the Sounds that Enchanted Melville & Jack London
As a reader of travel books from another era, I have finally found a CD of the exotic Marquesas Islands, the setting of Herman Melville's book, Typee, and a stopover sight of Jack London's voyage aboard the Snark in 1907. The Marquesan chants on this CD are my first encounter with the wonderful sounds of the language and music of this South Pacific island culture. If you want to dream away the hours on a snowy winter day, wishing for a paradise in the tropics, this CD will help transport you there. If you are looking for modern French Polynesian music, this is not the CD for you, but if you want to experience a simple Marquesan parish choir whose members sing with all their hearts and with spontaneity, you will cherish the simple beauty of these hymns. This is not a CD intended to bring in the tourist trade, but simply to share the joy of Sunday, the Marquesan feast day.
