Customer Reviews
wonderful music
This set is worth every penny. It contains all the songs from 4 albums plus many singles; approximately 100 songs most of which I have been unable to find elsewhere. Songs include the rousing 'Melba from Melbourne' and the tender 'Fly Butterfly Fly'. This set showcases Marty at his country best. A few traditional pieces are included, just Marty and his guitar. His beautiful clear voice captures the homesickness of a soldier in 'Just Before the Battle Mother' and the joy of returning love in 'Long Long Ago'. I thoroughly enjoy this set and might just wear it out.
Most underrated country singer ever
Marty Robbins is vastly underrated. You hear Cash, Williams, Jones, too name a few but what about Robbins? All singers named before Robbins have amazing careers and songs that changed millions of lifes, but they all dealt with drug issues and are sometimes overrated. Robbins I haven't heard anything negative about him. The Bear Family sets are very expensive but well worth every penny, the music is amazing. I wish Nashville would give this man more credit.
Man of the Decade
Marty was voted 'Man of the Decade' in the 60's for his outstanding contribution to Country music during that time when many of my compatriots were taking America by storm. Many his 45's and album tracks show up on this 4 c.d. set but there are some omissions unfortunately. The stunning Joe Babcock song 'Won't you forgive' (flip of Ruby Ann), Love Can't wait, 'I told the brook' and 'You told me so' come to mind. The set covers from 1960 to 1966 so when (if ever) will we get the tracks from 67 to 72? His classic R.F.D. album is included along with his only (more's the pity) Sacred album 'What God has done which shows Marty at his emotional best along with his moving versions of 'Just before the Battle Mother' and 'Long Long Ago' which for some obscure reason were archived by Columbia and never released in Robbin's lifetime. They are Marty at his best. All in all well worth the money and apart from the greatest voice ever to grace Country Music it also has some fabulous guitar work by the one and only Grady Martin.
