Outstanding and unexpected music from the Pre-Outlaw days5
This is Part 2 of the Bear family collection. (Part 1 is called The Journey: Destiny's Child.) Rather expensive, yes, but a great value as there are about 150 songs here and each CD represents a couple of albums. I haven't done all the math, but you are getting about 15 albums worth of his music. I was particularly pleased to find that all the cuts from album he did with the Kimberley's ("Country-Folk") is on disk 1, along with 16 other cuts from the late 60s and early 70s.

On the down side the organization leaves a bit to be desired, with later songs appearing on CDs before earlier songs, but for me this album has been a revelation. I admit it, I LIKE the "Nashville Sound" which characterized what I heard on the radio while I was growing up. It came after the more Western/Hillbilly sound (think "yodeling") and before Rock/Pop/Country merged in the mid-70s.

Waylon has a wonderful natural voice that contains something purer than what we hear in his later music: a more mature sound, but also a voice affected by years of smoking and pill-popping. I could be wrong but I think there will be a revival of this early music.

Of note is that in the early years Waylon took a great fancy to folk singing and covered several Lightfoot songs as well as Dylan and Ian Tyson. He covers songs we associate with Peter Paul and Mary and The Seekers. Of note also is that his first emmy was for, get this, "MacArthur Park." He loved Harris's version but does an outstanding job singing with the Kimberleys--creating another authentic take on what I consider one of Jimmie Webb's masterpieces.

And finally (I could go on for another page or two...) Waylon did some recording sessions guided by Lee Hazelwood. Later Waylon settles into the whole "Outlaw" thing, but in these early years we see wonderful music coming from unexpected collaborations.

Where has this music been all my life!!! I am now going to buy Part 1 of this collection.

A serious Waylon fan5
I have been looking for the song "Revelation"for a very long time.I finally found out that it was on this set of cd's. I couldn't ask for a better collection of music, from such a great artist!I am really enjoying my music. It is worth every cent of the price.

Outstanding Box Set5
Here's another immense Bear Family Records Box Set; this one covers the early years of the great Waylon Jennings. This is the pre-"Outlaw" Waylon, before the hype and huge late-70's commercial success. There are 6 CD's here, all of them expertly mixed and with superb sound. While many of the songs included here are Cover songs, Waylon's take on them are as good or better than the originals. The first set of music is typical Waylon-style honkytonk, but is followed by Waylon's brief (thankfully) flirtation with Folk music. We are also introduced to Waylon's take on the Bakersfield Sound; the influences of Wynn Stewart are unmistakable. As with all of the Bear Family releases, there's a huge booklet (this one is actually hardcover, nearly the size of a large phot album) detailing Waylon's early recording career, with pictures from Buddy Holly and Faron Young, and even a young Jessi Colter. This one is well worth your money and will provide hours of listening pleasure. A+
