More of Old Klemp's Mozart4
This title in EMI's "The Klemperer Legacy" series features the great conductor's stereo recordings of Mozart's 33rd, 34th and 40th Symphonies, and the "Masonic Funeral Music." The "Masonic Funeral Music" and Symphony No. 33 were recorded in 1964 and '65 respectively with the New Philharmonia Orchestra, while Symphonies Nos. 34 and 40 were recorded with the Philharmonia Orchestra in 1963 and 1956 respectively. Many of Klemperer's recordings at this late stage in his career suffer from slow tempos, but his Mozart does maintain its stride. Generally though, I consider "Old Klemp's" Mozart performances a notch below other vintage accounts by Bohm, Szell, Walter or even Wand. This is certainly the case with Symphony No. 40, but with the other two, you have the following problems. Bohm's 33 & 34 are only available as an import title, Szell's 33 is out of print, I'm not sure if Walter even did 33 & 34, and Wand's accounts have been made available recently, but are at full-price. And besides Klemperer's renditions are quite good compared to the vast majority of titles out there, and overall are a joy to have in my collection. As with many other EMI series, "Klemperer Legacy" discs are becoming harder to find and some are already out of print. Interested parties should purchase this CD quickly.
